Dear Reader January 2011

Happy New Year! I love January; it is such a glorious month filled with hope and promise. A blank canvas, which has been laid out before us eagerly waiting to accept the pictures we will paint.

Every year around Thanksgiving I start working on my Christmas project – custom calendars filled with photos of the grandkids for our parents. First, I sort all the pictures I have taken during the year; easily the best part of the process. This year, I believe I started with somewhere near 4,000 images. Then it gets into the details of picking options and ultimately designing each page and writing captions. We have been doing this for 10 years and of all those years the making of the 2011 Calendar was the hardest and most time consuming. In fact, I swore more than once it was the last time I would ever do it, but in the end, I think it is my all time favorite. And so in November, I will start filling in our blank canvas once again.

We should however, turn our attention to what we will be painting on the pages of 2011 here at DERMASCOPE. I would like to give you a peek into what we have in store for you and steer you towards several areas of interest. So, here is a brief look at three or four of the new and renewed departments.

  • Trade Secrets: In this department we are selecting key people throughout the industry to interview and get the inside scoop on their career hits and misses as well as advice for those still climbing to the top. see page 36
  • AP Forum: This department is generated through readers and members of our website AestheticsProfessional.com. You ask the questions and we find the experts to answer them. If you have a question you would like answered join AP and start a thread in the Forum and in addition to the responses from other members it may also be published in a future issue. see page 38
  • Resources: The name has changed and so has the format, previously Highlights, this department has been expanded to feature an article dedicated to a given ingredient or product type as well as provide information on correlating products.
  • see page 43

  • Closing Thoughts: This is just a fun department on the last page. Every month we will print a question at the bottom that will relate to an upcoming issue and we want to hear and share your thoughts with your colleagues. We will also post the questions at AestheticsProfessional.com in the Forum, so you can read and answer there or by e-mailing your response to amckay@dermascope.com. see page 130

In addition to DERMASCOPE, the most exciting new tool is the Aesthetics Professional Network. I am not going to go into detail here, but if you have not already heard about and joined APN, I encourage you to turn to page 52 and read another new department that will appear intermittently throughout the year Company Profile. We have chosen to launch this department by profiling AIA, DERMASCOPE, and APN as well as how best you can maximize the benefits of each.

I hope you are intrigued by all that is new and thrilled with the mainstays. I look forward to your feedback, because it is the information that drives our decisions and helps us keep your magazine fresh and relevant to your needs.

All my best,
Saundra, Dermascope Magazine, Skin Care Magazine
