Dear Reader – October 2009

There are tools all around us that were designed to help us and guide us along our way. Unfortunately many times we are completely unaware, rendering them useless to us. For instance, I recently had the privilege of attending a defensive driving class, and I learned something about the signs on Texas highways that I never new. Apparently, the signs that inform you of upcoming exits have tabs at the very top noting the exit number. That part is fairly self-explanatory. What I didn’t know however, is that the tab is placed either on the right or left side of the sign according to what side of the highway the exit is on. Brilliant! This next trivial little fact is even better and more universally applicable; the tabs on your box of foil. Be honest, how many times have you sent the roll of foil flying out of the box while trying to cover up the leftovers? Did you know that on either end of the box there are tabs you can press in to create a spindle, which allows you to easily unroll the foil while keeping the roll in place? Once again, brilliant!
Now, about DERMASCOPE; do you know why it is The Encyclopedia of Aesthetics? For years we have been told by our most loyal readers that they archive their issues and reference them over and over for many years. In fact the word encyclopedia is defined by the Concise Oxford American Dictionary as: a book or set of books giving information on many subjects or on many aspects of one subject and typically arranged alphabetically. While we don’t arrange our subjects alphabetically, we do offer information on many aspects of one subject; that subject, of course, being the study and practice of aesthetics. By archiving your issues, you can build a library that is readily accessible for your reference. To help you quickly find the information you are seeking, we note the main topic of each issue on the spine and publish an Index of Stories annually in December. The articles are listed in the Index by category, more than one if applicable. Soon we will also have the articles archived on the website so you will be able to search articles and issues published before you began subscribing.
DERMASCOPE is but one of many resources designed by Aesthetics International Association (AIA) to help you in your career. I am thrilled to tell you that your subscription to the magazine is about to get so much better. We understand that now more than ever you need access to resources and tools that will stimulate your career. Therefore, we have lowered the cost of the AIA membership to $49 and when you renew or subscribe, you will also be joining AIA. As a member of AIA you will enjoy many great benefits such as our Human Resources, Educational Resources, and Business Resources. I invite and encourage you to visit our website,
www.aiaprofessional.com for more details. You can also come by our booth or classroom at The International Congress of Esthetics and Spa – Philadelphia, October 25 and 26 to visit with one of the Board of Directors and learn how you can maximize the benefits of AIA.
Finally, did you know (I have to stick with the theme) our offices have moved? Please update your address books to reflect our new address: 310 East I-30, Suite B107, Garland, TX 75043. Our phone numbers and e-mail addresses will remain the same. I look forward to welcoming each of you to AIA as you renew.
Together we can make a difference!

See you in Philly,
