How many of you have heard or read The Daffodil Principle? It is a great story that I’ve received via e-mail at least twice, and both times it came at the perfect moment. But then again if you’ve read it, chances are you realize that there probably isn’t a bad moment to read it again and again. I wish I had room to publish it here for you to read; unfortunately, it is a bit too long. However, you can find it posted in the Water Cooler section of DERMASCOPE’s discussion forum, www.dermascope.com, if you would like to read the whole thing.
“The principle of the story is this, learning to move toward our goals and desires one step at a time – often just one baby-step at time – and learning to love the doing. Learning to use the accumulation of time, when we multiply tiny pieces of time with small increments of daily effort, we too will find we can accomplish magnificent things. We can change the world!” –Taken from the e-mail.
This thought, philosophy, principle, whatever you want to call it, reminds me so much of this industry. As I approach my ninth anniversary with DERMASCOPE, I am still in awe of holding the position that I do with the first publication that was produced exclusively for skin care therapists! More than 30 years ago when this company was founded, things were a lot different of course, but as I survey the landscape today I wonder, “How different are they really?” Yes, of course there have been advancements in ingredients, products, and technology. But education and training on the licensing program level still has room for improvement in many instances. And now, instead of fighting to break away from the hair industry, there is a battle between the skin care and medical communities.
What I’m trying to say is this: Based on “The Daffodil Principle” it doesn’t matter what we, as an industry, have done or could have done in the past 30 years; it only matters what we do from this day forward!
As you have likely noticed this year, AIA has renewed their commitment to their mission of raising the standards of education and consumer awareness in the aesthetics industry. Hand-in-hand with DERMASCOPE we are once again trying to pave a new road for the future of this industry just as our founders did 30 years ago. Together it is our goal to raise the standards of education and create a national standard. In order for this to become a reality, we must create an association that is truly about, for, and by the skin care professional. You already change the world of your clients every day. One person at a time, one day at a time, with each of you we too can do magnificent things and change the world of skin care forever.
Have a wonderful month!
