Twenty-six scientists have received a total of $2.06 million in grants from the National Psoriasis Foundation to study psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Eight scientists each received a one-year, $50,000 Discovery Grant for pilot projects that have great potential to lead to breakthroughs in our understanding of psoriatic diseases and to discover better treatments. The grants are also intended to lay the groundwork for additional, long-term funding from the National Institutes of Health and other funding agencies. Six scientists each received a two-year, $200,000 Translational Grant for studies that aim to move laboratory and clinical discoveries into projects and treatments that benefit patients. Twelve early-career dermatologists were also awarded Psoriasis Foundation medical dermatology fellowships. These fellowships provide support of new doctors training to do research in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. The fellowships are intended to increase the number of doctors studying psoriatic diseases.

The family of Peter T. Pugliese, M.D., author of Advanced Professional Skin Care, Medical Edition, and founder of Circadia by Dr. Pugliese, Inc. has established a named memorial fund in honor of Dr. Pugliese’s late wife, Joanne Elizabeth. Mrs. Pugliese was diagnosed with ALS shortly before her death in December, 2010. The Fund is used to help attract and retain adequately compensated skilled workers who do the critical end-of-life in-home care for families suffering with Lou Gehrig’s disease. New York City’s Grace Church School was the first recipient of the TOPS sun-safe makeover campaign with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, executive vice president and artistic director for OPI, spoke at the first West Coast Lucky FABB conference at the Annenberg Community Beach House in Santa Monica, Calif. Weiss-Fischmann participated in a panel titled “How Brands Work with Blogs,” which addressed questions on company/blogger relationships. OPI recently launched the OPI Blogger Network, which currently encompasses over 65 nail, beauty, fashion and lifestyle blogs.
American International Industries (A.I.I.) brands China Glaze® Nail Lacquer, Ardell® Lashes, It’s So Easy® Nail Art and more provided pampering services to eight deserving young ladies and their mothers at the Wish Upon A Teen, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping those in need, Mother/Daughter Spa Day. The event took place at the Sonya Dakar Skin Clinic in Beverly Hills, and hosted teens battling cancer from the Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA.
Bellus Academy hosted more than 200 women who were treated to a night of pampering and beauty education in celebration of San Diego Women’s Week. Dr. Howard Murad discussed the importance of Inclusive Health and cosmetic medical expert, Dr. Donna Richardson, spoke about non-invasive cosmetic procedures to heighten beauty and defy the effects of aging.
