The Professional Beauty Association (PBA) is pleased to announce that a recent bill in Indiana (HB1006), which would have deregulated the cosmetology industry and repealed professional licensing boards and all licenses, was stopped! PBA’s Government Advocacy team, in partnership with representatives from JCPenny, SportClips, Honors Beauty College, PCPC, ICMAD, ISPA, ISBN, AACS, NCEA, Intercoiffure and others, helped organize the countless beauty professionals that leant their time and talents to stopping the bill. Through outreach efforts, over 18,000 beauty professionals from across the nation quickly came together to voice their opposition to state lawmakers through letters, e-mails, phone calls and social media posts about the harmful effects passage would cause to the cosmetology profession and consumer safety. State lawmakers listened and the bill will not be moving forward for a vote. Indiana Rep. and bill sponsor, David Wolkins, R-Winona Lake, advised the Evansville Courier & Press on Wednesday that stylists, aestheticians and others who came to testify on the bill last week were so persuasive that their industry should be licensed and regulated that he would not even ask for a vote on the legislation.

pevonia beauty_busIt is often said that “beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.” But in reality, beauty is not simply represented by each person’s exterior physical appearance. True beauty lives within each individual heart and soul. Sadly, when lives are threatened by illnesses, outside appearances can slowly damage a person’s outlook on life. However, this is greatly changing thanks to the help of a little green bus. Pevonia recently teamed up with the Beauty Bus Foundation, a nonprofit public benefit corporation who aims to bring dignity and beauty back into the lives of chronically and terminally ill women, men, children and their caregivers. Pevonia is now serving as a product sponsor and will donate one hundred products per month during the six month charitable sponsorship.

Stiefel, a GSK company, announces that Hats On For Skin Health, its global campaign with the International League of Dermatological Societies (ILDS), has raised enough funds to produce 15,000 sun-protective hats for albinos living in East Africa and has already distributed more than 2,000 hats. The hats are being distributed from Tanzania, where estimates are that 98 percent of albino children will die before the age of 40 from cancers of the skin – a direct result of the sun’s damaging rays. Worldwide, albinism affects about one in 20,000 people. However the incidence of albinism in Sub-Saharan Africa is significantly higher than in the rest of the world, specifically in Tanzania where the incidence is one in 1,429.

Ganeden Biotech announces research results demonstrating that its patented probiotic (beneficial bacteria) derived, cosmeceutical ingredient, Bonicel, improves skin hydration, elasticity, under eye puffiness and reduces fine lines and wrinkles in humans. The double blind, placebo-controlled study, conducted on female subjects ages 35 to 60, found dramatic results in reducing signs of aging. In subjects at four weeks, Bonicel increased skin hydration by 16 percent, skin elasticity by 11 percent, and decreased fine lines and wrinkles in 50 percent of respondents. In addition to results measured clinically by Cutometer and silicone replica, subjects’ self reports found that 75 percent reported, “The dark circles under my eyes are less visible” and 75 percent of the treatment group reported, “The skin around my eyes feels more moisturized.”

Aesthetic Factors, LLC, an emerging company focused on autologous, point-of-care systems in regenerative medicine, is pleased to announce that a study examining the efficacy of the SELPHYL System used with fat grafting procedures has been published in Volume 29 Issue 1 of the American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery.  SELPHYL is an ultrapure Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM) preparation. Using a small amount of the patient s own blood, the system isolates and prepares PRFM for injection back into the patient. SELPHYL naturally produces and releases a host of biologic growth factors that have been shown to promote tissue regeneration. Lead researcher, Richard Goldfarb, M.D, analyzed the potential of SELPHYL to increase vascularity in fat transfer thus improving longevity potential. Fat grafting is used for facial rejuvenation, primarily to smooth out wrinkles and restore volume to areas of the face that have been deflated over time. However, historically, the long-term survival rates of autologous fat grafting have been variable. Consequently, fat grafting does not always produce the long-term correction which patients are looking. The duration of fat transfer alone varies considerably, lasting anywhere from six months to several years. After three to 16 months of consistent follow-up, outcomes reflect that SELPHYL has given fat grafts not only a higher rate of permanency, but also a greater take rate.
