The Independent Cosmetic Manufacturers & Distributors (ICMAD) has issued a statement that it joins the Personal Care Products Council, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and consumer groups that supported a safety review by the Independent Expert Cosmetic Ingredient Review Panel (CIR) of the use of formaldehyde/methylene glycol in professional hair straightening products. The CIR in its review reaffirmed its earlier finding regarding safe levels of use of these ingredients in cosmetic products at concentrations of 0.2 percent or less. Additionally CIR noted that use of these ingredients in hair straightening products with the application of heat could release formaldehyde gas, which is an irritant and sensitizer. ICMAD supports the work of OSHA, its state counterparts in ensuring compliance with worker safety and hazard communication rules, and the work of FDA in ensuring that the safety of these products is substantiated and the labeling is compliant.

To end the confusion about this Fall’s Day Spa Expo in Atlanta, The Day Spa Expo Management Team felt it was their obligation to inform attendees and exhibitors that the show produced by Bentley International Group, Inc. is not being held this year. The Atlanta Day Spa Expo originally scheduled for September 17th – 18th, 2011 has been re-scheduled for October 14th – 15th, 2012 at the Cobb Galleria Center in Atlanta, Ga. The show was postponed because Premiere Birmingham produced by DAYSPA Magazine is being held on exactly the same dates. With this show in Birmingham, Ala., (only a short distance away from Atlanta), The Day Spa Expo Management Team did not feel it would be fair to their exhibitors to have to make a choice about where to spend their promotional budget.
