Ben Johnson, M.D.|Chief Executive Officer Founder Formulator and Educator

Dr. Ben Johnson started his career in 1997 when he opened one of the first medical spa chains with various locations in the United States. Johnson later founded and formulated his first skin care line, Cosmedix, with a strategy that was unique at the time – creating medical-strength results using all natural and chirally correct ingredients. Johnson developed Osmosis Skincare with the goal of changing the direction of skin care away from excessive exfoliation and focusing on dermal remodeling. The product range has created a great deal of excitement in the beauty industry thanks to its unique action and outstanding results.

I have been in the aesthetics industry for 15 years. I have been an owner of a chain of medical spas, a skin care formulator, an educator, a medical director, and an inventor. Owning the medical spas, however, was the most impactful because it forced me to look for better alternatives to what was available. I needed to experience the aesthetic world, the marketing deception, and the failure of lasers and devices in order to realize that a new direction was needed in this industry. The only regret I have is that I wish I would have learned a long time ago how easy it is to create your dreams.  I always believed you had to work for it; I now know that you simply need to have focused intention and the rest falls in place. A lot of effort may still be needed but I do not have to fight for it. The constant theme throughout my career has been to never stop asking questions about how or why things work. Personally, I am always surprised at people’s resistance to change, no matter how compelling it may be. Location or word of mouth usually gets clients to go to a particular spa; results and the relationships formed will bring them back. I believe the best clinics are unique because of their level of knowledge and the ability to find the right tools for the job in a sea of bad equipment and products. When considering the tool or tools used in the treatment room, I personally believe it is not complete without an ultrasound device that improves the penetration of the masks and serums being used in facials. When aestheticians presume procedures which cause the skin to experience more inflammation and trauma is better for the skin… they are wrong!Unfortunately, we continue to believe that the skin is fresher or younger looking from these traumatic treatments but they actually cause the skin to age a little bit with each procedure. Over the years, I have made adaptations to stay relevant in the treatment room. One way I achieve this is by continuing to invent new ways of treating conditions that are otherwise considered incurable, such as melasma, age spots, psoriasis, broken capillaries, eczema, et cetera. My secret to balancing my life is passion. As an educator, formulator, researcher, medical spa owner, and chief executive officer, I love what I do! I want to change the world for the better and that is what keeps me happy and on the right path.

DERMASCOPE:
Has there been a constant theme that has led you from one point to the next throughout your training and career? continued…

Ben:
Never stop asking questions about how or why things work. Then focus your attention on finding the best options based on your understanding.

DERMASCOPE:
Do you have a signature treatment that your clients love – a classic of sorts? What makes it so loved?

Ben:
Osmosis’ Facial Infusion is a non-acid peel that permanently thickens the dermis and causes no trauma so it can be used on every skin condition.

DERMASCOPE:
As a manufacturer, is there a particular ingredient that you feel is a “super” ingredient? If so, why?

Ben:
Retinaldehyde is a great ingredient because it stimulates 1000 times more collagen than retinol without being irritating.

DERMASCOPE:
Do you or your company support any particular causes or charitable organizations? If so, who and why?

Ben:
Osmosis supports organizations for homeless and battered women amongst others.  My goal is to create a non-profit organization that plays an important role in healing disease
