Aside from the familiar ylang-ylang or geranium, the question of scent in skin care and massage products presents itself. Why do products seem to have a greater benefit than just hydration and relaxation? What makes a certain aroma give such rich results?

THE ROOT CAUSE
Have clients had issues with their skin itching from pain? The endocannabinoid system is related to the immune and nervous system. When it is off, there are so many health conditions that materialize within and upon the skin. When there is a newer aroma to the senses such as cannabis, or a more familiar scent such as lavender or orange, chances are it stems from a secretion of these bioactive, aromatic compounds known as terpenes. These terpene molecules, made by citrus, evergreen, and cannabis plants to name a few, are responsible for smell and flavors. They are common to human diets and generally recognized as safe. Topically, they are safe fresh when used appropriately.
BENEFITS
Produced by numerous plants like lavender and rosemary (and even some insects), terpenes, which create the strong odor that identifies the smell of such plants, herbs, and animals, can also be beneficial to clients’ olfactory system when used with aroma therapeutically. When properly isolated and ingested, terpene oil has health benefits from the tip of the head to the tip of the toes. There are claims seen in the medical world linking terpenes to alternative medicine therapies. They interact with enzyme systems in the body, second messenger systems, and neurotransmitters to create physiological effects.
HEALTH
Terpenes, terpenoids, and cannabinoids at a bird’s eye view may inaccurately be assumed to play similar roles in plants (and animals) and thus could be used interchangeably in the manufacturing of skin care products, massage products, and food items. They complement and come from one another due to the nature of their behavior as chemical compounds. The critical role of protection and immunity by terpenes in a living plant is different from the terpenoids, which is the result once the plant dries and the terpenes oxidize. Terpene levels rise as the plant dries, but the smell leaves greater amounts as it dries. And cannabinoids, just like terpenes, are one of many chemical compounds presented in the cannabis plant.
In summary, clients will appreciate the organic benefit of terpenes because skin and overall health will be better protected, stronger, and more vibrant – a result of using these gems in skin care and massage care body products.
