How to Perform A Proper Patch Test

Aestheticians are always learning about new ingredients, creating new seasonal menus of services, and building custom skin care routines for clients. One of the first things taught in an aesthetic program is how to do a patch test. When a client comes into the spa, it is important to do a skin consultation to see what type of skin they have, what products they are using, and any allergies they may have. Patch tests are an excellent way to be sure that the product will work for a client and that they will be comfortable.

Patch tests are normally done for more advanced facials, such as peels or enzyme facials. When doing a patch test, it is recommended to perform the test 24 to 48 hours prior to the scheduled procedure to be sure there are no adverse reactions such as redness, itching, and burning. Behind the ear, inside of the arm, and along the jawline are some of the locations product can be applied for the patch test. It seems most prefer the jawline or behind the ear as these are closer to facial skin. When applying the product, it is best to let it dry and have the client remain for 10 to 15 minutes before leaving the spa to monitor for reactions. If the client does experience a reaction, wash the area with cool water and apply an anti-inflammatory product, like hydrocortisone cream, to minimize the length and severity of reaction. If the client does not experience any adverse reactions, they are free to go, but be sure to document location of the patch test, as well as follow up the next day with the client. If a client declines a patch test, document it for liability purposes.

In the event a patch test cannot be performed or is refused, it is important the client is well informed and feels comfortable saying they are feeling itchy or a burning sensation at any point during the treatment. Be sure to check in with client as the service is being performed and document any type of reaction.

A patch test is an essential part of a treatment. Understanding how to perform one accurately and make clients feel comfortable is of the utmost importance.
